The carnation Moonique (Dianthus caryophyllus, transformation event 19907) is a fower colour modified variety. The flowers have a deep purple colouration due to the accumulation of delphidin-related anthocyanins.
These carnations were transformed with the vector pCGP2442 using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. They express two flavonoid 3',5’-hydroxylase genes, one from Viola sp. and one from Salvia splendens, and the dihydroflavonol reductase encoding gene (dfr) from Petunia hybrida. The encoded Enzymes are involved in the production of the blue-coloured anthocyanin pigment delphinidin and its derivatives.
A variant form of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) from Nicotiana tabacum was used as a selectable marker to confer tolerance to sulfonylurea herbicide.
